What are free radicals?
According to the International Dermal Institute, “free radicals may be formed through natural human physiological processes as well as from the environment. They may be the result of diet, stress, smoking, alcohol, exercise, inflammation, drugs or exposure to sunlight and air pollutants. While there are many types of free radicals that can be formed, the most common in aerobic (oxygen breathing) organisms are oxygen free radicals, often referred to as Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), which include superoxides, hydroxyl anions, hydrogen peroxide and singlet oxygen.”
“Oxygen free radicals are implicated in the overall aging process and are responsible for photoaging, cancer and inflammation in the skin. Oxygen free radicals cause lipid peroxidation, which results in damage to cell membranes and this can cause premature aging, skin cancer and cell death.”
How to expel free radicals
According to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, “to prevent free radical damage, the body has a defense system of antioxidants.”
“Antioxidants are molecules which can safely interact with free radicals and terminate the chain reaction before vital molecules are damaged. Although there are several enzyme systems within the body that scavenge free radicals, the principle micronutrient (vitamin) antioxidants are vitamin E, beta-carotene, and vitamin C. Additionally, selenium, a trace metal that is required for proper function of one of the body’s antioxidant enzyme systems, is sometimes included in this category.”
It is of course best if these micro-nutrients are supplied in the diet, and exercise is also helpful to combat free radicals. The New England Journal states that, “regular physical exercise enhances the antioxidant defense system and protects against exercise induced free radical damage.”
Protect skin from free radical exposure
Every day, our skin is exposed to free radical attacks from UV light, air conditioning, radiation, and other harmful environmental forces. These factors can be out of our control especially when we are traveling.
They can be neutralized with antioxidant-rich formulas that absorb into the skin, which is why Juice Beauty is radically transforming the chemistry of skincare with its proprietary base of nutrient-rich certified organic botanical juices, and advanced, high potency ingredients, Vitamin C and fruit stem cells, vegetable hyaluronic acid, peptides, algae, grapeseed, and natural essentials oils.
