Healthy Summer Sunning
While getting that sun-kissed glow might look healthy and gorgeous, it’s still important to protect your skin from the sun’s harsh UVA and UVB rays, especially if you live somewhere sunny or are spending more time outdoors!
Choosing a Sunscreen
Chemical sunscreens may smell like coconuts and look crystal clear, but studies show that they can disrupt hormone levels and even harm our coral reefs. Plus, many don’t contain broad spectrum sun protection, which protects against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays.
According to the Environmental Working Group, “the sun’s ultraviolet radiation is responsible for 80 percent of facial aging signs such as wrinkling, dryness, sagging and spotty pigmentation,” so it’s necessary to use sunscreen. Searching for the right one can be confusing, though, so here are a few basic things to avoid:
- No Spray Sunscreens (these cause inhalation risks and are annoying for those downwind from you on the beach)!
- No Super-High SPFs (avoid anything higher than SPF50 as it may tempt you to stay in the sun longer and the effectiveness isn’t much greater)
- No Oxybenzone (used in conventional SPFs, this can be toxic when absorbed, acts like estrogen in the body and can also damage coral reefs)
- No Retinyl Palmitate during the day (a form of Vitamin A that may speed development of skin tumors)
- No Sunscreen Towelettes or Powders (FDA sunscreen rules bar these because you don’t know how much sunscreen is actually getting on your skin)
- No Tanning Oils (little to no sun protection)
Zinc Oxide is the way to go. It’s a natural mineral and physical blocker that protects with broad spectrum. You might be thinking that this is what gives that white pasty look, but there are sunscreens out there—like ones from Juice Beauty—that contain mineral and plant pigment tints to offset any whiteness, and sink into the skin really quickly. So much so, that makeup artists use the Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle CC Cream (SPF30) as a dewy complexion coverage base!
What to Take In Your Beach Bag
Juice Beauty’s SPF 30 SPORT sunscreen is conveniently travel sized and offers 80 minutes of water resistant protection, as well as skin-soothing aloe and antioxidants. This is the perfect sunscreen for sport and water activities.
The travel size Hydrating Mist is a great companion on the beach, a little spritz and you feel refreshed and on top of the world. Place it in your beverage cooler for a real refreshing spritz!
If you tend to get breakouts or just have too much oil production in the summer months, Juice Beauty offers an Oil-Free Moisturizer with SPF 30 that clears while hydrating and protecting. Plus, it just won Best SPF Moisturizer in Time magazine!
After Sun Care
While any product containing cooling ingredients like aloe and cucumber will help calm the skin, we often don’t think of doing anything beyond that to decrease the appearance of sun damage.
To reveal a brighter complexion, try exfoliating 1-2 times per week using potent alpha and beta hydroxy acids like those found in Juice Beauty’s patented Green Apple Peel. This miracle formula made with organic fruit acids sloughs away dead skin cells, evens skin tone and reduces the appearance of dark spots. The best part? It comes in full strength, sensitive, blemish and pregnancy versions!
Skin Care Tip: Don’t forget your neck, décolleté and the backs of your hands as these are the first areas to show signs of aging.
For additional skin cooling, Juice Beauty’s new Green Apple Brightening Essence can be patted into the skin post-treatment to refine and balance, leaving a thin veil of moisture on the skin.
