Karen Behnke, Juice Beauty Founder Talks All Things Mascara
Find out about mascara ingredients, Karen’s first experience buying it, and why she wanted to create a clean and effective formula for the Phyto-Pigments makeup collection.
“I remember how excited I was when I bought my first mascara! Lip gloss and mascara are quite often the first entrée into the makeup world for young girls, and it was the same for me. I continue to love mascara today, as do most women who want the look of longer, thicker and darker eyelashes. That’s why we were so passionate about developing a high performance mascara for Juice Beauty.
One of the many makeup experiences that Gwyneth Paltrow, Juice Beauty’s Creative Director of Makeup, and I shared during testing, was trying on multiple natural mascaras, only to embarrassingly end up with black raccoon rings under our eyes within hours (not a good look!)

Mascara Ingredients
So what, exactly is in most conventional chemical, and many “natural” mascaras – but of course, NOT in Juice Beauty products?
Polymers, silicones, synthetic nylons or rayons, aluminum powders, petroleum glycols, acrylates, and animal derived waxes and keratins.
Many conventional chemical and natural mascaras get their color from carbon black, which is produced by combustion of heavy petroleum products. These products are also often preserved with many types of parabens. See our Clean Beauty section for more information on why you should avoid all of these ingredients.
What makes Juice Beauty’s mascara so different, clean, and effective?
It contains great ingredients for conditioning the lashes, like organic aloe, vegetable glycerin, and jojoba esters. The luscious black color we’ve been able to achieve comes from plant pigments of argan shells, rose flowers, and purple carrot, along with some minerals.
