Organic Beauty Products

Caring for your whole body and overall health includes making skin care choices that support and contribute to a healthy lifestyle. As the skin absorbs over 60% of what is applied topically, it is extremely important to choose healthy, organic beauty products instead of conventional products that are full of unnatural, chemical-laden ingredients.

Everyday more information becomes available on the harmful effects of exposure to common preservatives and toxic chemicals contained in these conventional skincare and makeup products. Skin problems, such as acne, dermatitis, and allergies may develop because of toxic ingredients like parabens, phthalates, and petroleum. Often these conditions disappear once these ingredients are removed from the skincare regimen and organic beauty products are used instead! Using truly natural and organic beauty products will help you avoid feeding your skin harmful chemicals and can contribute to healthy skin and a healthy body in the long run.

Natural doesn’t always mean truly natural.

A natural product is described as one that contains mostly or completely naturally derived ingredients, however, there is no legal regulation for a product to be labeled natural, so unfortunately many companies deem their products ‘natural’ for marketing purposes even if the products contain as little as a single ingredient that is derived from the earth – far from being legitimately formulated with natural ingredients!

In addition, some products may actually contain and tout the benefits of natural ingredients but still contain unhealthy chemicals and preservatives such as parabens, synthetic fragrances, sulfates, and glycols. For instance, a product may contain plant extracts, and yet still be petroleum based and loaded with synthetic, chemical-laden fragrances.

Reading the ingredient listing and educating yourself on the ingredients is the only way to spot the real ‘naturals’ from those just enjoying the marketing benefits.

Key offenders to steer clear of include:

  • parabens
  • synthetic fragrance
  • phthalates
  • sodium laurel sulfate (SLS)
  • petroleum
  • propylene glycol
  • butylene glycol
  • polyethylene glycol (PEG)
  • artificial colors (FD&C)
  • diethanolamine (DEA) and triethanolamine (TEA)

Beyond simply natural, Juice Beauty delivers authentically organic beauty products.

When you’re able to cut through the greenwashing, there are some fantastic, legitimately natural products to find on the market, but beyond natural, what is the difference for organic? Simply put, natural refers to anything that grows naturally. Organic, however, is a label reserved for only the purest ingredients grown without the use of pesticides or other potentially harmful chemicals. Imagine an apple you’re buying at the grocery store. There is a conventionally farmed and an organically farmed option. Though both apples are healthy, the healthiest choice is the organically farmed apple to avoid eating the harmful pesticides the conventionally farmed apple was exposed to while growing. The same goes for ingredients that are used in skincare and beauty products, meaning that organic beauty products made with certified organic ingredients are the healthiest options!

Unfortunately, just like with the term ‘natural’ there are loopholes that some companies dishonestly use to falsely market products as organic. In the United States, a ‘product name’ is exempt from regulation and may contain the word ‘organic’ or some modified form of spelling of ‘organic’ and still contain very little organic content (or none at all).

With labeling laws being so murky, how do you distinguish between true organic beauty products and those that just say they are?

Educate yourself on the various seals and certifications. The two most trusted are the USDA organic seal, which means the product contains at least 95% organic ingredients, and the Made with Organic Ingredients seal, which means 70% or more of the product is organic ingredients. Juice Beauty is proud to be able to use both!

Additionally, if a product is labeled Organic on the front of the package and sold in the State of California, which has some of the most rigorous organic regulation in the world, then the products must contain USDA certified organic ingredients from a farm that uses a system of farming that maintains and replenishes soil fertility without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides or fertilizers. This means when using organic beauty products formulated with these ingredients, you’re not exposing your skin and body to unhealthy pesticides and chemicals.
